Some decades ago, many people died because of serious diseases such as: caners. In the 1950s and 1960s, scientists worked hard to treat these diseases by using different ways like organs transplant.  The first successful transplant was operated in 1968. Transplant is a procedure that used to replace abnormal cells with normal once. There are diverse types of organs transplantation, for blood they use either bone marrow or stem cell transplantation. This essay will compare and contrast between them, with highlight on their usage, procedures, and side effects.First point of comparing and contrast between bone marrow transplantation and stem cell transplantation is the usage. Bone marrow is defined as a soft and squishy substance found inside the bones (University of Rochester Medical Center, 2017). According to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (2017), stem cells are found in bone marrow or umbilical cord, they can develop into different types of cells. The usage of both transplantations is similar. Both are used to treat genetic blood disorders like Beta thalassemia, and blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2017 & University of Rochester Medical Center, 2017). Although, University of Rochester Medical Center (2017), reported that there are certain situations only use bone marrow transplantation like: eliminating solid-tumor and build a new immune system. The successful of transplantation is affected by several factors such as age, overall health, genetics, and disease response to treatment (University of Rochester Medical Center, 2017). As Safra & Aguilar-Cauz (2010), mentioned that ”bone marrow transplantation is not recommended for patients older than 50 years of age, because of the higher mortality that result”(p. 261).The second point to compare and contrast between bone marrow transplantation and stem cell transplantation is the procedures. In both Transplantations, the procedures can be done two ways: autologous transplant, and allogeneic transplant. Autologous transplant is using patient’s stem cells or bone marrow, while allogeneic transplant is using donor’s stem cells or umbilical cord blood. In addition, allogeneic transplant is more complicated than autologous transplant, because it needs a matched tissue, either from close family members or unrelated donors (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2017, University of Rochester Medical Center, 2017 & Safra & Aguilar-Cauz, 2010). Unfortunately, ”about 75% of patients do not have suitable donor in their family and require cells from matched unrelated donors” (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2017, para. 5). As a result, in allogeneic transplant the hazard of graft versus host disease(GVHD) or rejection is higher (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2017, University of Rochester Medical Center, 2017 & Safra & Aguilar-Cauz, 2010).  The last point to compare and contrast between bone marrow transplantation and stem cell transplantation is the side effects. Based on The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (2017) & University of Rochester Medical Center (2017), patients who undergo either bone marrow transplantation or stem cell transplantation, they might have one or more of these side effects. One of the serious complications is bleeding in the brain and gastrointestinal (GL) tract due to less platelets. Patients may also suffer from anemia. Infections either viral, bacterial or fungal are so common after these procedures, so patients will require antibiotic. There is a chance of transplantation failure because of GVHD due to the difference between the patients and donor’s cells protein. In the future, technology will find the solutions to reduce these complications.    In brief, this essay shows the similarities and differences between bone marrow transplantation and stem cell transplantation, focusing on the usage, procedures, and side effects. As a conclusion, the difference is the source of the transplanted stem cells, while the steps of both transplantations are the same. Sine medical field developing is so rapid, I believe that, one day there will be other ways to treat such serious diseases with less complications.
