Adaptation and
Mitigation

There are lot of
things that the country of United Kingdom is doing that is pursuing towards
preparedness to adapt to future impacts of climate change.  “A climate act change was introduced in 2008
that makes the United Kingdom the first country in the world to have a legally
binding long-term framework to cut carbon emissions. It also creates a
framework for building the UK’s ability to adapt to climate change. In this
act, it is established that there will be a Climate change risk assessment taking
place every five years. Also, a National Adaptation Program must be put in
place and reviewed every five years to address the most pressing climate change
risks to England. The Government has the power to require public authorities and
statutory undertakers (companies like water and energy utilities) to report on
how they have assessed the risks of climate change to their work, and what they
are doing to address these risks. The Government is required to publish a
strategy outlining how this new power will be used, and to provide guidance on
what reporting authorities need to do. An Adaptation Sub-Committee of the
independent Committee on Climate Change should be created to oversee progress
on the Adapting to Climate Change Program and advise on the Risk Assessment.” (National
Reports). With this carefully planned out act being signed, it helps the
country of the United Kingdom get ready for helping curb climate change. Also,
another way the Uk is trying to combat Climate change by avoiding the impact of
flooding. The plan is to have a new standard for buildings so if floods hit,
the damage is reduced

According to the
executive report for the European region for adaptation, Adaptation comes with
a cost. The cost of upgrading buildings to make them stand strong in a flood,
is expensive but it is necessary. Also on an international level, an adaptation
policy has been laid and it is expected of European countries to follow.
Finally people in these countries have started adopting these cultural practices
that help curb the release of greenhouse emissions. Kyoto protocol was initiated
and with uk part of it committed to a 12.5% reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions. “In 2010, the Cancun Adaptation Framework was adopted, and it
was agreed that adaptation must be given the same priority as mitigation. The
framework calls for further action on adaptation including reducing
vulnerability and increasing resilience to climate change in developing
countries.” (The CCC)

The Paris Agreement also places significant emphasis
on the need for adaptation action around the world.” (The CCC)

“The Paris Agreement
also places significant emphasis on the need for adaptation action around the
world.” (The CCC). “The United Kingdom has signed the Paris Agreement. It was
ratified on 18th November 2016 and was entered into the force on 18th
December 2016.” (UNFCCC). “The UK is on track 2020 targets. The new Government
also recently announced a new legally binding 5th Carbon Budget for the period
2028- 32, which is also the same as emissions reduction of 57% by 2030 on 1990
levels and consistent with the long-term goal of at least an 80% reduction by
2050.” (UNFCCC). According to Intended Nationally Contributed pdf, the United
Kingdom and other members of EU are committed to a binding target of an at
least 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to
1990. “The majority of European Union Member States expect to meet their
individual emission targets for the non-trading sectors under the Effort
Sharing Decision.” (EEA) This also includes this United Kingdom

“Most of the UK’s
electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels, mainly natural gas (30% in
2015) and coal (22%). 21% of the electricity in the United Kingdom comes from
nuclear reactors. Renewable technologies made up 25% of electricity generated
in 2015” (energy-uk). Economically, migrating helps keep money in the system.
With less damage comes less cost.
