Lara Croft is one of the most successful and easily recognisable heroes in the online video gaming industry but she’s one of a minority. Men feature far more often as protagonists and they are routinely depicted as muscle-bound and military-minded. Women, on the other hand, are scantily clad and often disproportionately sized. While Lara doesn’t rely on any man to help her as she solves mysteries and shoots villains, her character hasn’t escaped controversy and the most regular complaint is about her exaggerated breast size. This overt sexualisation of female characters is common practice in many online video games and it’s been explained away by pointing out that the majority of gamers are males. However, the gaming terrain is changing and according to a 2012 survey, 47% of gamers are in fact female.
The way males and females are represented in the online gaming world is generally a mirror image of society and it depicts popular stereotypes. With the numbers of female gamers and developers growing, so too is the amount of casino games which exclusively feature a female lead who is tough, smart and dressed in appropriate clothing.
